The Qurbani cattle market in Rangamati is getting busy. It has been set up at the municipal truck terminal. A visit on Thursday, 7 July, showed cattle arriving from various parts of the hills. Besides selling here, traders are trucking animals to Chattogram, Dhaka and other districts.

Palash Chakma, who brought cattle from Bilaichhari, said: "I raised two cows and brought both to the Qurbani market this year. I sold one for Tk 75,000 and am asking Tk 80,000 for the other. I hope to get a good price."

Another seller, Jasim Uddin, said: "I brought 13 cattle from various upazilas. I have sold four at Rangamati market and will take five to Chattogram. I'll see if the rest can be sold at Rangamati."

Haji Abu Taher Mia, a buyer, said he was walking round the market looking at cattle to see if any suited him. "If it's within budget, I'll buy."

Razzak Saudagar said he had been walking round the market since morning. "The cattle I like have sky-high prices. Still, if the choice and the price match, I'll take one."

Ruhul Amin, leaseholder of the Qurbani market, said there are enough cattle and goats and sales are good. Hill cattle are meeting demand here and also being taken elsewhere. There is overall security at the market and no problems so far, he said.

Additional Superintendent of Police Mahmuda Begum told Jago News that three-tier security has been arranged at the market and no untoward incident has occurred so far.
