A wild elephant has raided a home in Eidgarh, a hill-ringed union of Ramu in Cox's Bazar, killing a one-and-a-half-year-old child and injuring another child aged 10.

The incident happened before dawn on Wednesday, 18 June, in the hilly area of Moittatoli.

The dead child, Abdur Rahman Saad Moni, was the son of Amir Hamza of Moittatoli in Eidgarh. The injured child is Amir Hamza's daughter, Bilkis Akter.

Eidgarh union parishad member Jashim Uddin said a herd of wild elephants entered the area at night. On its way, one elephant attacked Amir Hamza's home and family members ran for their lives. Amir Hamza's young son Abdur Rahman Saad Moni and daughter Bilkis Akter were injured in the attack. Local people drove the elephant away, rescued the injured and took them to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital.

After they reached hospital, Abdur Rahman's condition worsened and doctors referred him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. He died on the way there on Wednesday morning.

On receiving the news, Taukir Hasan, Eidgarh range officer of the Cox's Bazar North Forest Division, visited the scene. He said the Forest Department would arrange assistance for the affected family on the basis of an application.
