The administration of Rajshahi University (RU) has taken a special initiative to protect migratory birds and natural resources. Signboards have been put up on campus to raise public awareness of wildlife conservation, setting out the laws and penalties that protect migratory birds and wildlife.

Pro-vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Sultan-Ul-Islam described the measures while visiting the Narikelbaria campus at about noon on Sunday, which the report dates 25 September.

He said that at the start of winter, migratory birds travel thousands of kilometres to reach the country's rivers, canals, beels, lakes, haors, baors and other water bodies, looking for safe shelter and food. "If we cannot give them that shelter and let them stay safely, we have not lived up to our ideals as human beings," he said.

He said migratory birds keep biodiversity in balance by eating insects and also play an important part in pollinating flowers and crops. The government has passed various laws to protect them and biodiversity, so everyone should become aware and make others aware of the need to protect these birds.

Pro-vice-chancellor Professor M Humayun Kabir, proctor Professor Dr Asabul Haque, dean of the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Professor Dr Md Jalal Uddin Sardar, and assistant proctors Dr Arifur Rahman and Dr Zakir Hossain were among those present.
