Thirty-five eggs of a venomous snake have been recovered from the floor of North Pingri Community Clinic in Rajapur upazila of Jhalakathi.
The eggs were found on the morning of Tuesday (18 March) while the clinic floor was being dug up for repairs. Fear has spread in the area that the mother snake and other snakes may be nearby.
Rajapur upazila livestock officer Dr Abdullah Shuvo confirmed that the eggs belong to a venomous snake.
Clinic staff had long feared snakes
Workers on the repair job said that after removing bricks from the floor they saw 30–35 egg-like objects in a hole. When these were taken out, they were confirmed to be snake eggs.
Mukta Rani Das, the community health care provider (CHCP) at North Pingri Community Clinic, said that because the clinic floor was broken, staff had long sensed snakes were present and at times smelled venomous snakes, so they lived in fear.
Dr Abdullah Shuvo said the size and type of the eggs suggest a venomous snake, but it is not yet possible to say which species.
