A huge python has been caught in a farmer's net in Nalitabari, Sherpur. Forest department officials came on receiving the news and released it. The snake was found in the field of Sirajul Islam in Hatipagar village on the afternoon of Tuesday, 17 September.

Local people said two young men, Nahid and Lutfar, went to the bank of the Bhogai river that afternoon to collect ant eggs for fishing. They saw a snake caught in a fence made of thread netting on the ridge of farmer Sirajul Islam's chilli field. They informed Mizanur Rahman, chairman of Nayabil union parishad, who told the Madhutila range officer of the forest department.

Forest department staff then came and took the python away that afternoon, as people from the surrounding area crowded to see it. It is thought the python drifted down the river from deep in the hills and got caught in the net of the riverside field.

The rescued python is over 8 feet long and weighs about 9kg, said Madhutila range officer Rafiqul Islam. He said the net caught around its body was cut away, and the python was released in completely healthy condition into Madhutila forest in the evening.
