Pirojpur's cattle markets have become busy ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, and sales rise as the Eid draws nearer. But buyers say cattle prices are higher than last year.

Visits to the district's markets found cattle of various sizes arriving, with sellers asking from Tk 40,000 up to Tk 9 lakh.

At Pachpara, one of the district's biggest cattle markets, a seller brought a cow of about 8 maunds. Buyers offered Tk 2 lakh, but the seller was asking Tk 2.5 lakh. Buyers complain that prices are much higher than last year, while sellers say prices are up because cattle feed costs more and animals are scarce.

Buyer Abbas Ali told Jagonews24: "The cow that could be had for Tk 80,000 last year, traders are asking Tk 1,20,000 for this year."

Buyer Chhagir Hossain said there are many cattle at the market but prices are very high, and people are struggling to buy.

Seller Nadim Sikder, however, said cattle feed prices have risen a lot and rearing costs more. "If we do not get a fair price we will lose money. But because prices are a bit higher, sales are lower than last year," he said.

According to the district livestock department, demand for sacrificial animals in the district this year is 40,000, while 35,000 are ready.
