New areas of Cox's Bazar are being flooded by hill runoff after heavy rain. In Pekua, a trader died after being bitten by a venomous snake while moving from his flooded home to a safe shelter. The incident happened at midday on 8 August.

The trader, Nasir Uddin (55), died of the snakebite at around 12 noon in the Harinafari area of Pekua Sadar union. He was the son of the late Ali Ahmad of the Annar Ali Matbarpara area of Pekua and ran a crockery business at Pekua bazar.

Pekua upazila parishad chairman Jahangir Alam said Nasir had settled in the Harinafari area a few years ago, and his home was submerged by the flood caused by continuous rain. On Tuesday morning, as he left his house for a safe shelter, a venomous snake bit him. He was rushed to the Pekua Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Pekua upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Purbita Chakma said that as all the graveyards in Pekua Sadar had been flooded, an alternative place was being found to bury Nasir Uddin. Local representatives and the family have been asked to complete the burial at the alternative site.
