About 50 schoolgirls, teachers and staff fell ill at MU School in Kalapara, Patuakhali, on Wednesday, 30 September. By 7pm, 29 had been admitted to Kalapara hospital; others were treated at nearby Amtali hospital and at clinics.
At the midday break a tenth-grade student first developed convulsions and breathlessness. Other girls in the class followed, and then the same symptoms appeared one after another among students of classes nine, eight, seven and six. The girls said they suddenly could not breathe, then had convulsions and could not move their arms or legs.
A doctor in the hospital's emergency department said those affected were suffering from hysteria, a psychological condition, and were being treated with priority.
Teachers, residents and parents put the number who fell ill at 50 to 60. They were taken to hospital in auto-rickshaws, tomtoms and CNG taxis, and several girls fell ill after reaching home.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Arifuzzaman and local representatives went to the hospital and arranged beds, medicine and round-the-clock treatment.
