Some 250 kilograms of disease-free carp fingerlings have been released into 47 institutional ponds in the municipality and unions of Patiya upazila, Chattogram. The upazila administration and the senior upazila fisheries officer's office distributed them under the revenue budget on Monday morning, 28 September, Dainik Azadi reports.
The fingerlings, 10 to 15 centimetres long, were rohu, catla, mrigal and kalibaus. Patiya's member of parliament, Enamul Haque Enam, handed them to representatives of the institutions and opened the programme by releasing fingerlings into the upazila pond.
He said fish is a staple of the daily diet and a key source of protein, and that the local fisheries office and the public must make sure no water body is left out of fish farming: wherever there is water, there should be fish.
The event was chaired by upazila nirbahi officer Farhanur Rahman and attended by senior upazila fisheries officer Swapan Chandra Dey, upazila agriculture officer Habibullah and other upazila officials.
Raising safe fish production in water bodies, the MP said, would both improve people's livelihoods and meet their daily need for protein, and he said the government treats it as a priority sector.
