A man named Md Ibrahim, 45, has been detained in a raid in Patharghata, Barguna, with 350 kg of deer meat, three skins and a head. He was sentenced to one year in prison.

Md Sohag Khan, range officer of the Patharghata forest department, confirmed the matter to Jago News on the afternoon of Friday, 11 September. The convicted man, Ibrahim, is the son of Md Munsur Ali of South Chardoani in Patharghata upazila.

According to the forest department, the coast guard received information that a gang was hunting deer and smuggling the meat in the Patharghata area. It informed the forest department at about 1.30am. A coast guard team then raided an area called Kaliar Khal in South Chardoani in the presence of forest department staff. At about 2am they stopped a boat, searched it and seized 350 kg of deer meat, three skins and a head. The coast guard detained Md Ibrahim along with the wooden boat used for smuggling.

He was sentenced to one year in prison and fined Tk 50,000, in default of which he will serve three more months. The court also ordered the seized meat to be buried and the skins preserved by the forest department. Judicial Magistrate Ponir Sheikh conducted the court.

Range officer Md Sohag Khan told Jago News that the forest department and coast guard carried out a joint operation after receiving the tip-off from the coast guard. A large quantity of deer meat, skins and a head were recovered, and on the court's order the seized meat was destroyed by burying it.
