Palm saplings have been planted in Rajshahi to reduce the country's growing risk of lightning and to protect the climate and biodiversity. The programme was organised by the Rajshahi divisional committee of the ICT Employee Society of Bangladesh (ICTESB), a professional body of ICT graduates and employees.

It was inaugurated at 5pm on Friday by planting palm saplings in the area next to the gate of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET).

The chief guest was RUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr SM Abdur Razzak. Special guests were Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Akhtar Hossain, Director of Student Welfare Professor Dr Md Rabiul Islam Sarkar and Dr Md Abdul Wahab, executive director of the Centre for Global Environment and Development.

The event was chaired by engineer Junayed Ahmed, president of the society's Rajshahi divisional committee, and conducted by engineer Md Firoz Ali, secretary general of ICTESB and head of RUET's Mechatronics Engineering department.

Present were Md Yakub Ali, assistant professor of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering at RUET, Alok Kumar Pal, assistant professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Riad Khan Ratul, Md Lablu and Afridi Khan of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Forum, and teachers, students and staff.

The Centre for Global Environment and Development provided overall support for the programme.
