Amid a marital dispute, a man fed up with the quarrels released a venomous snake in his home. His wife and two-year-old daughter died from the snake's bites. Unbelievable as it may seem, this happened in India's Odisha state.

The Indian news outlet NDTV, citing local police, reported on Friday 24 November that the killing of the wife and child by releasing a snake took place about a month and a half earlier in Adhegaon village under Kabisuryanagar police station in Odisha's Ganjam district. The man responsible has been arrested.

According to the NDTV report, the man is named K Ganesh Patra. He married K Basanti Patra (23) in 2020. They had a two-year-old daughter named Debasmita. Things were fine at first, but after some time trouble began in their household.

On 6 October Ganesh brought a cobra home in a plastic jar. His wife and daughter were asleep at the time, and he took the chance to release the snake in the room. The next morning both were found dead from snakebites. Ganesh was sleeping in another room.

Ganjam's superintendent of police Jagmohan Meena said Ganesh had bought the venomous snake from a snake charmer, saying he would "use it for religious purposes". Police registered an unnatural death (UD) case. After Basanti's father filed an FIR accusing Ganesh of murder, questioning began.
