The carcass of a wild elephant has been recovered from the Betgara area of Kalmakanda, Netrokona, close to the Indian border.

The carcass was recovered on the morning of Friday 18 November. The cause of the elephant's death is not known.

Durgapur forest range officer Saidul Islam said local people saw the elephant lying dead in a paddy field in the Betgara area of Rangchhati union on Friday morning and informed the Forest Department and the police.

The carcass was recovered around midday, and the Kalmakanda upazila livestock officer was then called for a post-mortem.

Range officer Saidul Islam added that it could not yet be said what had killed the elephant, and that a general diary (GD) would be filed with Kalmakanda police station over the incident.

Mohammad Abdul Ahad Khan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kalmakanda police station, said police had been sent to the spot as soon as the news came in.
