Nepal wants to use Bangladesh's experience of irrigation management in the Barind region. Shakti Bahadur Basnet, Nepal's minister for energy, water resources and irrigation, sought Bangladesh's cooperation in using its irrigation management and digital methods in Nepal's agriculture.
He made the request at a bilateral meeting with Bangladesh's agriculture minister Dr Md Abdus Shahid on the afternoon of 21 May in Bali, the Indonesian tourist town. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 10th World Water Forum under way in Bali.
Members of the Bangladesh delegation at the meeting included Bangladesh's ambassador to Indonesia Md Tariqul Islam, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) director general Dr Md Shahjahan Kabir and agriculture ministry joint secretary Dr Muhammad Jahangir Alam. The information was given in a press release from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Prepaid meters and hydropower
The meeting stressed increasing cooperation between Bangladesh and Nepal in agriculture. The Nepalese minister praised the irrigation management through prepaid meters and the digital irrigation technology of the Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) in Bangladesh's Barind region, and asked for Bangladesh's help in using the technology in Nepal's agriculture. A Nepalese delegation recently visited the Barind region to see the technology on the ground.
Nepal's irrigation minister Shakti Bahadur Basnet also sought Bangladeshi investment in hydropower generation in Nepal, and said 500 megawatts of hydropower would be exported to Bangladesh.
The agriculture minister said steps must be taken to increase cooperation in these areas.
