The three-day National Fruit Fair 2025 has begun on the grounds of the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) at Khamarbari in the capital. The fair is being held to make local fruit familiar to everyone.

Agriculture adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury opened the fair shortly after 11am on Thursday, 19 June. It will run until 21 June.

Opening the fair, the adviser said it would be held in all 64 districts and also at upazila level, with the aim of introducing local fruit to everyone. Many people do not know local fruit and eat foreign fruit such as grapes and apples, he said, although local fruit is superior in quality and taste.

Urging people to eat local fruit, the adviser said this would also save foreign currency. Bangladesh is sending large amounts of local fruit abroad, including mangoes, jackfruit and guavas, and has newly started sending mangoes to China. Farmers will benefit if exports rise, he said.

Earlier, the adviser toured the fair. A total of 75 organisations are taking part: 26 government and 49 private.

The Ministry of Agriculture said in a press release that the fair is being held in 431 upazilas of the country's 64 districts, including the capital. This year's theme is "Eat more local fruit, let's plant fruit trees".

The fair is open to all from 10am to 8pm every day. Visitors can learn about fruit-growing technologies and buy chemical-free fruit of various varieties.
