Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, an albino buffalo called 'Donald Trump' has already caused a stir in Narayanganj, with people travelling from far and wide to see it.
This year two albino buffaloes, 'Donald Trump' and 'Netanyahu', can be seen together on the same farm in the district. They were also raised together, and curiosity about the pair has been growing.
The farm's herdsmen named one buffalo 'Donald Trump' because the hair on its head resembles that of the US president. The other was named after Israel's prime minister, Netanyahu, because it is short-tempered and prone to charging.
Both animals were raised at SS Cattle Agro Farm in Bandar, Narayanganj. Besides the foreign-breed buffaloes, the farm keeps several hundred local and foreign-breed cattle and sheep.
Named by the herdsmen
Rasel, a herdsman at the farm, said: "One buffalo was named 'Donald Trump' because of the hair on its head. The other one shows anger for no reason. It picks fights with other buffaloes on its own and then loses. That is why it was named 'Netanyahu'."
Rasel said their feed is special too: they like grass, maize and bran. Many people have been coming to see them since word of their names spread.
A visitor, Sadia Rahman Niha, said: "We have been hearing the names Donald Trump and Netanyahu for so long. Now I have come to the farm and seen them. I am quite amazed. The buffaloes are very beautiful."
The farm's owner, Mehenuma Mehjabin, said: "We have been running the farm for a long time and keep many kinds of animals. As part of that we are raising albino buffaloes."
On the names, she said: "The herdsmen give the names; we do not. These buffaloes are a little different, so the herdsmen named them out of their own interest."
Surplus of sacrificial animals
Narayanganj district livestock officer Dr Md Abdul Mannan Mia said the district has a surplus of sacrificial animals this year compared with demand. To ensure healthcare for the animals, 25 veterinary medical teams will work in the district, identifying sick animals and providing prompt treatment.
