The agriculture department expects a bumper aus rice harvest in Narail district this season. Aus was planted on 9,107 hectares this year, with a production target of 23,597 tonnes of rice, and harvesting is now in full swing across the district's three upazilas.

Md Arifur Rahman, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Narail, said 81 per cent of the planted area had already been cut and farmers were busy harvesting and threshing; if the weather stays favourable until the crop is in, the yield will be a bumper one. The government's free agricultural incentives, he said, are drawing more of the district's farmers into aus every year.

By the department's count, aus covers 3,859 hectares in Narail Sadar upazila, 1,718 hectares in Lohagara and 3,530 hectares in Kalia.

Nipu Majumder, sub-assistant agriculture officer at the deputy director's office, said the varieties planted this kharif season (2026-27) are the high-yielding BRRI dhan 48, 55, 82 and 98, the hybrids Hira, Agro-12 and Biri-7, and the local Ratoil, Bhojon, Parangir and Naroi. Aus rice is prized for its taste, the district's soil suits it and demand is steady, so farmers return to it each year.

The short-duration crop grown between boro and aman gives the south-western districts an extra harvest with little irrigation; Narail's acreage and harvest progress this year are in line with what the incentive programme set out to achieve. The report is by BSS's Narail correspondent.
