A trader in Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj has been fined Tk 5,000 for buying sick chickens and selling them at an extra profit. More than a hundred sick and dead chickens were buried at the time.

Safe food inspector Nur E Alam Siddiqui led the drive at the upazila sadar bazar on Monday (27 March).

According to local inquiries, sick and dead chickens were found when a chicken shop was inspected during market monitoring on Monday. It then emerged that the trader had been buying sick chickens at a low price and selling them in the market in the hope of extra profit. Safe food inspector Nur E Alam Siddiqui immediately stopped the sale of the chickens.

More than a hundred sick and dead chickens were then buried. The trader was also fined Tk 5,000 by a mobile court for selling sick chickens that posed a risk to public health.

Nabiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Imran Shahriar told Jagonews: "I have instructed livestock officers to monitor the healthy chickens as well. They have been told to remove those too if they seem to be a threat to public health."
