Mymensingh district Chhatra League president Md Al Amin and his followers cut a poor farmer's paddy and carried it home on their heads. A woman Chhatra League leader also took part in the harvest.
From morning to afternoon on Wednesday (26 April), they cut the paddy on 40 decimals of land belonging to farmer Md Yunus Ali of Borobila village in Char Ishwardia union of the upazila.
Led by Md Al Amin, at least 20 Chhatra League activists took part, including Ananda Mohan College Chhatra League convener Sheikh Sajal, district Chhatra League joint convener Parvez Hossain Pavel and Sani.
"My ripe paddy was going to waste"
Yunus Ali said: "I am a very poor farmer. My ripe paddy was going to waste in the field, but I could not cut it because of the labour and financial shortage. The district Chhatra League president is a son of our area. When he learned of my situation, he cut the paddy from morning to afternoon today and delivered it to my home. I pray that Allah makes him a person of an even bigger heart."
Ananda Mohan College Chhatra League convener Sheikh Sajal said the Chhatra League had always stood by ordinary people in their hardships and in disasters. "On the instruction of the central Chhatra League, we have cut farmers' paddy and taken it home. This work will continue," he said.
A woman Chhatra League leader was also seen taking part: Selina Akter, president of the Chhatra League unit at Badrunnesa Government College in the capital.
Asked about it, Selina said: "It feels very good. I have felt the hardship farmers go through in farm work, and how hard they work for the people of our country. I want to say one thing: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the centre of the Bangladeshi people's hopes, is the architect of making the country self-sufficient in agriculture and food grains. Agriculture and farmers make up a large part of her development philosophy. On her instructions, Bangladesh Chhatra League is cutting farmers' paddy and bringing it home. We know farmers are our country's heroes; if they did not grow crops, we would starve. So everyone should come forward from wherever they are."
Mymensingh district Chhatra League president Md Al Amin said they had started cutting farmers' paddy and taking it home on the instruction of the central Chhatra League, embracing the slogan "If farmers survive, the country survives – Sheikh Hasina's Bangladesh". "I made enquiries and learned that Md Yunus Ali, a very poor farmer of Char Borobila village, could not cut the paddy on his 40 decimals because of the labour and financial shortage. After learning this, we cut the paddy and delivered it to his home," he said.
