The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved a Tk 751.77 crore project to build the Musapur regulator in Companiganj, Noakhali, and to improve integrated flood and river management and drainage in the Chhoto Feni and Bamni river basins. The project was passed at an ECNEC meeting at the Secretariat on Tuesday, Barta24 reports.
The 23-vent Musapur regulator collapsed on 26 August 2024 after heavy rain and upstream flooding, raising the risk of river erosion, floods and waterlogging along the Chhoto Feni and nearby areas. A new project to rebuild the regulator and improve river management and drainage was then taken up.
According to the report, the project could offer a way out of the coastal area's long-running problems of erosion, flooding, waterlogging and poor drainage. Local people hope it will also reduce flood risk and open opportunities for farming, fisheries and local transport.
