Bargaining between sellers and wholesalers begins at first light at the Muladuli fish wholesale market in Ishwardi, Pabna. On average Tk 2.5 million to Tk 3 million worth of fish changes hands each day, more at the height of the season, Krishi Shomoy's Pabna correspondent reports.
With a steady supply of fresh fish from rivers, ponds and beels, several hundred farmers and traders from Ishwardi, Atgharia, Chatmohar and Bhangura in Pabna, Baraigram and Lalpur in Natore, and Bheramara in Kushtia bring fish here every day. Wholesalers come at dawn from Dhaka, Sylhet, Rangpur, Khulna and other districts. The market has grown busy within a few years.
Rohu, catla, chital, silver carp, pangas, air, baim, kalibaush, pabda, koi, magur, shing, rita, shol, kachki, taki and puti, both native and farmed, are all sold there.
Traders complain that the market floods in the monsoon, and that a highway police ban on fish-carrying vehicles on the highway causes them trouble. Ismail Hossain, general secretary of the Muladuli fish wholesalers' association, says the market has brought big benefits to local farmers and traders and has given work to hundreds of people.
