Onion farmers in Mujibnagar, Meherpur, formed a human chain demanding a fair price for onions. The protest was held at Kedarganj bazar in the upazila on Monday afternoon (17 February).

Speakers said the government imports onions just when the onion season begins, which leaves farmers facing losses. This year was no exception: onion imports from India have affected the local market.

They said educated young people in Meherpur are coming into farming as agricultural entrepreneurs. If they do not get fair prices for onions, these entrepreneurs' efforts will falter.

Onions are currently selling at Tk 22-24 a kg, and farmers said the market is falling. During the protest they scattered onions on the road.
