At the traditional fish fair in Sherpur, Moulvibazar, fish trader Abdur Rahman is asking Tk 1 lakh 20 thousand for a catla weighing 60kg.
He said he bought the fish from Hakaluki haor in Moulvibazar specifically to sell at the fair. The trader puts the catla's age at about 10 to 12 years.
Along with the catla, he has also brought several large chital, rui, air and baghair.
A 200-year-old fair
Local journalist Ahmed Noor in Sylhet says the fish fair is held at Sherpur in Sadar upazila on the occasion of Poush Sankranti, and has been running for about 200 years.
As every year, some 200 fish stalls and about 30 fish arats have been set up this year. Traders have brought fish worth several crore taka from different parts of the country to sell at the fair.
Giant baghair at Sreemangal
At the fish market in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar district, the main attraction on Monday was a huge baghair.
Its seller, Hafiz Ahmed, claimed the fish, caught in the Meghna river, weighed 60kg. He asked Tk 1.5 lakh for it, but by 1pm the price offered had reached Tk 72,000.
