To meet fertiliser demand in the country's farm sector, the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase has approved a proposal to import 35,000 tonnes (plus or minus 10 per cent) of MOP (muriate of potash) fertiliser from Russia.

The approval was given at a meeting of the committee at the Secretariat on Thursday, 6 August, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

According to meeting sources, the fertiliser, the third lot of 35,000 tonnes (plus or minus 10 per cent), will be imported under a state-to-state contract signed between Russia's JSC "Foreign Economic Corporation (Prodintorg)" and the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC).

The import will cost a total of Tk 168 crore 29 lakh 7 thousand 187 and 50 paisa. The price has been set at US$388.55 a tonne.

Russia's JSC "Foreign Economic Corporation (Prodintorg)" was approved as the recommended bidder in the proposal.
