The Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation has rescued five young monocled cobras from under the staircase of a house in Kamalganj, Moulvibazar.

The snakes were recovered at about 4pm on Thursday, 10 September, from beneath the stairs of the home of Mujahid Ali, who lives in Japan, in the Panishala area beside Kamalganj Model School and College.

According to local sources, members of the family saw several snakes under the staircase that afternoon and the whole household was alarmed. They called the national emergency number 999 but got no solution. They then informed Rajkandi range officer Tanvir Ahmed and the Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation.

Rajkandi range officer Tanvir Ahmed, the foundation's director Swapan Deb Sajal and environmental activist Rajdeep Deb Deep rushed to the spot. They found that the snakes were monocled cobras, a highly venomous species, and safely recovered all five young one by one. The snakes were then handed over to the Sreemangal forest range office.

Confirming the rescue, Kazi Nazmul Islam, range officer of the Sreemangal Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division, said the young snakes would be released into the forest.
