Damaged flood control embankments, irrigation and drainage canals and irrigation infrastructure of the Meghna-Dhonagoda irrigation project in Matlab (North) upazila of Chandpur district will be repaired and rehabilitated. A project titled "Rehabilitation of the Meghna-Dhonagoda Irrigation Project and River Bank Protection" has been approved to improve the socio-economic condition of the people and ensure the safety of the irrigation project.
As a result, 6,700 hectares of land in the area will be brought under irrigation, making it possible to produce an additional 11,471 tonnes of rice every year.
The Planning Commission said the Bangladesh Water Development Board will implement the project at a cost of Tk 347 crore 65 lakh. It will be carried out in Matlab (North) upazila of Chandpur from January 2023 to June 2025.
Main activities
The work includes 127 km of ferro-cement lining of irrigation canals, repair of 54 km of existing ferro-cement lining and repair of 23.80 km of dykes along the main irrigation canal. It also includes repair of 478 irrigation structures (turnouts, regulators, check gates, escapes, siphons and aqueducts), reconstruction of 121 irrigation structures (turnouts, foot slabs and check gates), planting 10,000 trees, paving 60 km of field channels, re-excavating 12 km of drainage canals and periodic repair of 60 km of flood control embankment.
There will also be 12 km of repair and re-sectioning of flood control embankments, 2.02 km of slope protection for flood control embankments, 0.8 km of repair to river bank protection and 1.450 km of new river bank protection, 3 km of flood wall, three floating pumps, and removal of water hyacinth and other weeds from 161.12 km of drainage canals.
The project will also build 2,780 metres of boundary wall and 18 stairs and ramps at various points on the flood control embankment.
Planning Commission's view
If the project is implemented, 6,700 hectares of land in the project area will be brought under irrigation, making it possible to produce an additional 11,471 tonnes of rice a year. This will improve the socio-economic condition of the project area, and the project will play a supporting role in achieving the country's food security.
