A housewife named Asma Akter (35) has died of a snakebite while fetching cooking fuel in Saturia, Manikganj.

The incident happened in Shekhri Nagar village of the upazila on the morning of Friday (30 May).

According to local sources, at about 6:30am she climbed onto a loft beside the house from the kitchen to fetch fuel when a snake bit her on the foot. She ignored it and went on cooking. After a while she felt unwell and told her family about the bite. Her condition soon worsened, and she was taken to a local snakebite healer. As her condition deteriorated further, she was taken from there to the Sadar Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared her dead.

Abdul Latif, UP member for Ward No 9, said he came to the house after hearing of the death on Friday morning and the police had been informed. Asma Akter's husband, Rashedul, is a trader in fresh produce.

Shahinul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Saturia police station, said he had received news of the death and police had been sent. Necessary action will be taken after a preliminary investigation, he said.
