Bangladeshi mangoes are very tasty and there is strong demand for mangoes worldwide, Agriculture Secretary Dr Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian has said. The Ministry of Agriculture is working to use that demand to export mangoes to various countries, and as part of this, 50 metric tonnes of mangoes will be exported to China for the first time on 28 May.

Contacts are also continuing through the Bangladesh embassy in China with those concerned about exporting mangoes to various Chinese provinces, and efforts are under way to export jackfruit as well. The effort to export Bangladesh's mangoes extends to many countries, not only China.

The secretary gave the information at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road in the capital on Wednesday (21 May).

He said about 27 lakh metric tonnes of mangoes of various kinds are produced across the country each year. Total production was 27 lakh tonnes in 2022-23 and 24 lakh 50 thousand tonnes last year, 2023-24. Against this, 3,100 tonnes were exported in 2022-23 and 1,321 tonnes in 2023-24.

Although an average of 24-25 lakh tonnes is produced each year, only one to three thousand tonnes are exported.

Chief Adviser of the interim government Professor Muhammad Yunus has directed that new markets be found to increase mango exports, and on his instructions the Ministry of Agriculture is looking for markets around the world, the secretary said.
