A large quantity of jatka (young hilsa) has been seized in a mobile court drive in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur.

The seized jatka were distributed to 14 orphanages in Kalkini upazila on the morning of Wednesday, 8 April.

Acting on a tip-off, the drive was carried out at around midnight on Tuesday, 7 April, in the Mollarhat bazar area of Koyaria union in Kalkini upazila. Twenty-seven maunds of jatka were seized, but no one was detained.

Confirming the incident, Kalkini Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Saif Ul Arefin said the government was taking a firm stand on protecting jatka. Regular drives are being carried out to stop jatka being killed and will continue, he said, and legal action will be taken against those involved in illegally catching and selling jatka.
