Dr Nahid Rashid, secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, has visited sacrificial animal markets in the capital.

She visited the market at Aftabnagar on the afternoon of Tuesday, 27 June, accompanied by joint secretary Shahina Ferdousi of the ministry, Department of Livestock Services (DLS) director general Dr Md Emdadul Haque Talukder and senior DLS officials. The previous afternoon, Monday, she had visited the market at Gabtoli.

During the visits, the secretary supervised the work of the veterinary medical teams run by the DLS and instructed team members to stay alert so that sick or diseased animals cannot enter the markets. She toured the markets and talked to several farmers, buyers and sellers.

Speaking to journalists afterwards, Dr Nahid Rashid said there are 19 sacrificial animal markets in Dhaka this year and buying and selling has already picked up. A DLS veterinary medical team is working at every market. "We are trying to make sure there are no sick or diseased animals in the markets, and for that veterinary medical teams are working at sacrificial animal markets across the country," she said.

To provide veterinary services smoothly at the markets under the Dhaka North and Dhaka South city corporations, the DLS has deployed a central coordination team, five monitoring teams, 22 veterinary medical teams and two specialist veterinary medical teams.

In addition, nine deputy secretaries of the ministry are supervising the work of the veterinary medical teams and other activities at the designated markets in Dhaka.
