Leopard cat rescued from a Khagrachhari home and released in Alutila forest

Forest officials rescued a leopard cat that strayed into a house in Islampur on Saturday and released it in the Alutila reserved forest; a conservationist says it looked unwell and should have been observed first.

The Forest Department rescued a leopard cat, a rare species, from a house in the Islampur area of Khagrachhari town on Saturday afternoon and released it in the Alutila reserved forest.

Md Sajjad Hossain, range officer of the Khagrachhari range, said residents called the department after the animal entered a home. It bit and injured two forest staff during the rescue.

Mahfuz Rasel, founder of the Pitachhara Forest and Wildlife Conservation Initiative, urged more care in releasing rescued animals. Their condition should be watched after rescue, he said, and a sick animal should go to a rehabilitation or care centre. This one looked unwell, in his view, and should have been kept under observation for a few days before release.

He said the Forest Department has no treatment centre for wild animals, while Pitachhara has facilities to protect and treat them.

The report was filed by Banglavision's Khagrachhari correspondent.
