Ducks can be reared free-range, semi-free-range or confined on a farm. In rural areas they are mainly kept free-range. Laying ducks are valued far more than drakes, so here is how to rear them.
Duck house
Ducks spend the whole day swimming in ponds, channels and ditches and come home at night, so they need a house. A house 12 feet long and 6 feet wide can hold 50 to 60 ducks.
Duck feed
Ducks can digest almost any food, so feeding them is not much of a problem. The ingredients for each duck are:
- 45 grams of broken wheat or maize
- 12 grams of rice bran
- 12 grams of oil cake (groundnut or sesame)
- 10 grams of dried fish meal
- 15 grams of wheat bran
- 5 grams of bone meal
- 0.5 grams of salt
- 0.5 grams of mineral mix
If you feed these ingredients regularly in the right amounts, rearing laying ducks will prove profitable for you.
