A farmer named Faridul Alam (44) has been killed in an elephant attack in Lama, Bandarban. At the same time, a mother elephant died after being electrocuted by a wire laid to protect crops.
The incident took place on Monday night (6 January) in the Kumari area of ward 4 of No 3 Fasiakhali union in the upazila. Faridul Alam was the son of the late Ali Ahmmad of Bichhnyar Chhara in the area.
Attacked while guarding paddy
Local UP member Abu Omar said Faridul Alam went at night to guard his paddy field, where he was attacked by a herd of elephants.
On hearing the news, local people rescued Faridul and took him to nearby Chakaria hospital, where a doctor declared him dead.
Meanwhile, a pregnant mother elephant died after being electrocuted by a wire laid to protect the paddy field from elephants.
Lama forest department official Mostafizur Rahman said: "Having heard that a farmer and an elephant died in an elephant attack in the Kumari area, I am going to the spot. Because the area is largely uninhabited, details are taking time. The affected family will be given support in line with government rules."
