A hilsa weighing 2 kg 750 g has sold for Tk 13,250 in Kamalnagar, Lakshmipur. Fisherman Faruk Majhi sold it at Motirhat fish ghat on Thursday morning (24 September).

Ghat depot owner Ibrahim Khokon said Faruk Majhi returned from the Bay of Bengal after a week and sold hilsa worth about Tk 1.5 lakh, with the big fish sold separately. It was bought by Dhaka fish trader Bahar Mia.

Bahar Mia said he buys hilsa here to sell in Dhaka and expects a profit of at least Tk 1,000-2,000 on the big fish; a hilsa of this size sells for about Tk 16,000-17,000 in Dhaka markets. Small fish earn Tk 50-100 a kg, he said, while big hilsa pay better.

Local depot owner Anwar Hossain said hilsa had become scarce in the river, and the rise in fuel prices had made fishing harder for fishermen; those fishing at sea are getting a fair catch.
