Members of the Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation Federation (BBCF) and Manush Manusher Jonno Kushtia have rescued a Russell's viper (chandrabora) from a vegetable field beside the Gorai River in Kushtia.

On Friday afternoon (30 June), locals spotted a Russell's viper caught in the net fence of a vegetable field on the bank of the Gorai in the Jugia Dargatola area on the outskirts of the town. A local young man then informed the BBCF team.

BBCF members went to the spot that afternoon and took the snake away. News of the rescue spread quickly and a curious crowd gathered. Present at the rescue were Shahabuddin Milon, vice-president of BBCF and president of Manush Manusher Jonno Kushtia; organising secretary and journalist Nabbir Al Nafiz; Mir Kushal; and Riazul Haque Dalim.

Shahabuddin Milon said the Russell's viper was rescued from the Gorai bank in the Jugia Dargatola area on Friday afternoon and was later handed over to the forest department. "Every wild animal plays a special role in keeping the balance of nature and the environment, so we must all come forward to save this valuable resource. Let us all become aware and come forward to protect nature. If you see a wild animal trapped or held captive anywhere, try to rescue it and release it. Those who destroy nature will not be spared, however powerful they are," he said.
