Five kittens of a vanishing species of jungle cat have been rescued from the Shalghar Madhua area of Bagulhat union in Kumarkhali upazila, Kushtia. At around 8pm on Monday, January 10, three brothers, Tonmoy, Tanvir and Anas, rescued the kittens and handed them over to a Forest Department team.

Local people said residents of Shalghar Madhua village saw the kittens on the night of January 8 and caught them. The three young men later rescued them and informed members of the Kushtia team of the Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation Federation (BBCF).

On Monday night the kittens were rescued in a joint effort by the Forest Department and the BBCF. On the decision of the BBCF and the Forest Department, two healthy kittens of the five were released into their natural habitat and the three injured ones were handed over to the Forest Department.

Present were Md Abdul Hamid, officer in charge of the Forest Department in Kushtia, BBCF Kushtia team member Shahabuddin Milon, environmental activist and bird researcher SI Sohel, Nabbir Al Nafiz, and Forest Department officers and staff.
