Krishak League president and agriculturist Samir Chanda has called for three months of tree planting through Asharh, Shrabon and Bhadra to protect against severe heatwaves.
He made the call on Friday, 5 July, while inaugurating a tree-planting programme organised by the Khulna district Krishak League. As part of the programme, the Khulna district Krishak League planted 5,000 trees from Paikgachha to Koyra in Khulna district.
Trees as a shield against climate change
A discussion meeting was held after the planting. Speaking as chief guest, Samir Chanda said trees are true friends of people and the environment. Trees give people food and nutrition and supply the raw materials for medicine, as well as the pure oxygen we need to live. They protect us from the high temperatures, cyclones and tidal surges brought by global climate change. "So, responding to the call of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, let us all plant trees," he said.
The meeting was presided over by acting president of the Khulna district Krishak League, Advocate Khan Khorshed Alam, and conducted by its general secretary, Md Manikuzzaman Ashok. The keynote speaker was agriculturist Bishwanath Sarkar Bitu, acting general secretary of the Bangladesh Krishak League. Special guests were Bangladesh Krishak League vice-president Mahabub Ul Alam Shanti, organising secretary Professor Nazmul Islam Panu, acting publicity and publications secretary Nurul Islam Badsha, information and research secretary Shamima Sultana and cultural affairs secretary Mosa Halima Rahman, along with central, district and upazila Krishak League leaders.
