The Aziza-Rafiq Foundation has held a programme to plant trees and palm seeds, which help protect against lightning, in Kotiadi, Kishoreganj. Upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Khanjana Shahriar Bin Mannan opened the programme on Saturday (27 August) morning.

The event was chaired by the foundation's chief adviser Haji Md Rafiqul Islam Master. Those present included Kotiadi Model police station officer-in-charge (OC) SM Shahadat Hossain, Touhid Knitwear Limited managing director Md Touhid Uddin and Achmita union parishad chairman Md Matiur Rahman.

Speaking as chief guest, Khanjana Shahriar Bin Mannan said drought is now part of nature's hostility, and at its root lies unchecked felling of trees. Planting trees alone is not enough; trees must be given the chance to grow, he said.

The foundation's chairman Md Azizul Islam said: "Over the next 10 years we want to make Kotiadi upazila green. For that, we will plant 10,000 trees and 10,000 palm seeds every year. At least one lakh trees and one lakh palm seeds will be planted in Kotiadi upazila in 10 years."
