To bring cancer treatment to poor people in the north, the Khurshid Jahan Haque Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital has opened its outpatient department in Dinajpur. It plans to expand to 30 beds, with inpatient care, within three months.
The news was given on the afternoon of Saturday, 31 October, at the closing and scientific session of the Bangladesh Breast Cancer Awareness Forum's month-long awareness and screening campaign, held at the Zia Heart Foundation Hospital in Dinajpur.
Professor Dr Habibullah Talukder Ruskin, the forum's founder and chief coordinator, said two medical officers and an oncologist see patients every day in the outpatient unit in a temporary building, and that day-care chemotherapy for selected patients would begin on Sunday. A development project proposal has been submitted to the government to fund a building with a radiotherapy bunker and equipment on the hospital's own land.
Through October the forum and partner organisations held discussions, street meetings, a pink road march and distributed leaflets in Bengali in Dhaka and other regions, with street meetings in every upazila of Dinajpur on 29 and 30 October. From now on, Professor Ruskin said, they will run such a campaign in all upazilas of one district every month.
Chief guest Professor Dr A Z M Zahid Hossain, minister for social welfare and for women and children affairs, pledged the government's full support. Whip Md Akhtaruzzaman Mia and Professor Dr Provat Chandra Biswas, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services, were special guests.
