The maximum price of beef in Khulna city has been fixed at Tk 600 a kg and goat meat at Tk 850 a kg for the month of Ramadan. Traders have also been asked to keep chicken prices stable.

The prices were set at a views-exchange meeting with trade leaders on the afternoon of 1 April (Friday), aimed at keeping meat prices stable in the city. The meeting, organised by Khulna City Corporation (KCC) at the Shaheed Altaf auditorium in Nagar Bhaban, was chaired by City Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque.

In his speech the KCC mayor said a section of traders needlessly raise the prices of daily essentials during Ramadan in the hope of extra profit, which he called very regrettable.

He said the government was determined to keep prices stable during the holy month of Ramadan. Khulna City Corporation will strengthen market monitoring to keep prices bearable in the city, and legal action will be taken against any trader who raises prices without reason.

Present were Councillor Imam Hasan Chowdhury Moyna, chairman of KCC's standing committee on market price observation, monitoring and control; committee member Councillor Md Hafizur Rahman Moni; Chief Executive Officer (Joint Secretary) Laskar Tajul Islam; Veterinary Officer Dr Md Rezaul Karim; Veterinary Surgeon Dr Peru Gopal Biswas; Market Superintendent MA Majed; Md Ibrahim Hossain, deputy director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection; Md Nawazish Khan Tariq, monitoring officer at the district livestock office; Beg Liaquat Ali, president of the Phulbarigate Traders' Association; and meat and chicken traders.
