Intermittent rain and hill runoff from upstream are raising the water in Kaptai Lake in Rangamati day by day. The lake is now brimming, and its gates may be opened if the water rises one more foot.

As of Tuesday, the water level in Kaptai Lake stood at 106.97 feet mean sea level according to the rule curve. According to the Kaptai hydropower station, the lake should hold 101.30 feet MSL at this time of year, so it has more than five feet more water than required.

Engineer ATM Abduzzahar, manager of the Karnaphuli hydropower station, confirmed the rise to Jago News, saying the lake held more than five feet more water than its capacity. No release of water is being considered for now, he said, but if it rises another foot a release may become necessary. Power generation has risen along with the water.

According to the Kaptai hydropower station, 194 megawatts were generated from five units in the past 24 hours: 46 from unit one, 45 from unit two, 28 from unit three, 40 from unit four and 35 megawatts from unit five. All of this electricity goes to the national grid.
