Farmers in Joypurhat are moving to modern cultivation. Beyond the main crops, they are earning extra income by putting high ground and fallow land under vegetables.

That income meets household needs and also helps pay for the cost of the main crop.

The upazila agriculture office said summer vegetables have been grown on 130 hectares in Khetlal this season.

Sixty hectares of that is bitter gourd.

The rest carries pointed gourd, brinjal, snake gourd, bottle gourd, cucumber and other vegetables.

Bringing fallow and high land under vegetables is among the cheapest ways of raising the national food supply, because it needs no new farmland.
