Boro rice has been planted on 17,820 hectares in Chaugachha, Jashore, this season, 680 hectares, or 4,760 bighas, short of the target.
The target for this season was set at 18,500 hectares. Some 21,000 farmers in the area grow boro.
Farmers said they lost about Tk 5,000 a bigha growing rice in the last aman and boro seasons, so many have turned to maize, wheat, lentils and onions this time. That is why less rice has been planted.

According to sources concerned, boro rice has been planted this season on 2,120 hectares in Fulsara union, 2,100 hectares in Pashapol, 1,200 in Singhajhuli, 950 in Dhuliani, 1,100 in Chaugachha Sadar, 1,050 in Jagadishpur, 1,150 in Patibila, 1,550 in Hakimpur, 1,700 in Swarupdaha, 1,850 in Narayanpur, 2,350 in Sukhpukuria and 700 in the Chaugachha municipal area.
The varieties most widely grown are BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan50, BRRI dhan63, BRRI dhan81, Subollota, Kajollota, Miniket, Syngenta-1203 and ASL-88. Farmers have also grown other varieties.
Tariqul Islam, sub-assistant agriculture officer at the upazila agriculture office, said boro was supposed to be planted on 18,500 hectares in the upazila this season. But because rice prices fell abnormally last season, and because farmers are turning this year to maize, potatoes, onions, wheat, lentils and other crops, they planted boro on 680 hectares less than the target.
