Development partner Japan has expressed deep interest in strengthening cooperation in Bangladesh's agriculture sector.

Japan's ambassador in Dhaka, Iwama Kiminori, expressed this interest when he met Agriculture Minister Dr Abdus Shahid at the Secretariat on Wednesday (3 July) afternoon.

The ambassador stressed identifying areas of cooperation in agriculture between the two countries through a Joint Working Group. He said a delegation of government and private sector members would soon visit Bangladesh.

The agriculture minister sought Japan's cooperation in training Bangladeshi agricultural scientists, setting up factories to make farm machinery in Bangladesh, post-harvest management, food processing and the cool chain, and building cold stores.

Earlier at noon, South Korea's ambassador in Dhaka, Park Young Sik, met the agriculture minister. The meeting stressed strengthening cooperation in the two countries' agriculture sectors.

Joint secretaries of the Ministry of Agriculture Mahmudur Rahman and Muhammad Jahangir Alam were present.
