A teenage boy, Md. Yasin, 14, died in Islampur, Jamalpur, after a piece of sacrificial meat got stuck in his throat while he was eating.

The incident happened around 3pm on Thursday 28 May in the Nayapara area of Porarchar union in the upazila. Dr Abu Taher, the upazila health and family planning officer at Islampur Upazila Health Complex, confirmed the death around 9pm.

Yasin was the son of Rafiqul Islam of Porarchar Nayapara. He was a Class Six student at the local Batchar Lower Secondary High School.

According to local people and the family, Yasin was eating with his family after the sacrifice at midday on Eid-ul-Azha when a piece of beef suddenly lodged in his throat. He began struggling to breathe. Family members rushed him to Islampur Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Dr Abu Taher said the boy had died before he was brought to hospital. It is initially thought that he died of suffocation after the meat became stuck in his throat.
