An injured fishing cat has been rescued from a road in Jajira, Shariatpur. The animal was recovered at around 12.30am on Monday night (30 October) from the Rupbabur Hat area of Purba Naodoba union in the upazila.

According to local people and the upazila administration, Dabir Howlader (45), a local resident, was returning home with several others from a baul song performance at Rupbabur Hat at around 12.30am when they saw the fishing cat lying injured on the road. The others were too frightened to go near it, but Dabir Howlader tied its legs, took it home, cared for it and gave it water. When the fishing cat recovered and started growling, he shut it in a plastic box. He then informed the local administration.

"Several of us were returning home at night after listening to songs when we saw the animal lying on the road, groaning," Dabir Howlader said. "Because it looked like a tiger, the others were afraid and nobody went near it. Then I tied its legs with rope, took it home, poured water on its head and gave it water to drink. Later the animal recovered."

Jajira upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Kamrul Hasan Sohel told Jagonews that they had received news of the fishing cat being held. The upazila livestock officer has been informed and will go to the spot to collect the fishing cat, he said.
