India's tractor retail rises 13.75% on the year in September but slips from August

Dealers registered 76,906 tractors in India in September 2026, up 13.75% on a year earlier but down 12.58% from August, as later festivals and patchy monsoon rain led farmers to put off purchases.

Tractor retail registrations in India reached 76,906 units in September 2026, up 13.75% from 67,612 in September 2025, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) reported by Rural Voice. Against August, when 87,977 tractors were registered, sales fell 12.58%, making tractors the one soft spot in a month when India's wider vehicle retail market had its best September on record.

Two things drove the monthly dip, according to the report: major festivals fell later, in October, so farmers deferred large equipment purchases, and uneven monsoon rain in some farming belts dampened rural sentiment.

The longer trend is stronger. Tractor sales in the first half of the financial year, April to September 2026, totalled 556,862 units, 19.81% more than the 464,778 of the same period a year earlier. Mahindra Group kept market leadership with a combined share of 41.87%.

The market remains overwhelmingly rural. Rural regional transport offices accounted for 81.4% of tractor registrations in September and urban ones 18.6%; year on year, rural registrations rose 15.56% and urban 6.44%, while month on month they fell 13.27% and 9.44% respectively.

Diesel still has the field almost to itself. Diesel models made up 99.95% of tractor sales in September, against 99.99% in August and 99.93% a year earlier; electric tractors took just 0.05%.

The industry expects rural buying to pick up strongly in October and November, as Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali arrive and post-monsoon cash flow and festive financing turn deferred demand into sales.
