Farmer Al-Amin had spent two years raising a bull weighing about 500kg. Once it was fattened, he took it to market, where the bargaining was going well. He did not know the animal would collapse before it was sold.

The bull died suddenly of an apparent stroke at the Hossainpur cattle market in Kishoreganj on the afternoon of Thursday, 7 July. Its owner tried ice, water and other measures but could not save it.

The Holstein Friesian bull weighed about 500kg, and buyers had offered Tk 4 lakh for it before it died.

Al-Amin, of Borobari village in Pumdi union of Hossainpur upazila, broke down in tears at the unexpected death.

"I took the bull to Hossainpur market on Thursday afternoon to sell it. Even after an offer of Tk 4 lakh I did not sell, hoping for a higher price. Now I am ruined," he said.

An eyewitness said: "It looks like the bull had a stroke in the intense heat. We gave it water and ice, but it died within a short time."

Hossainpur Upazila Livestock Officer Abdul Mannan said: "We had a medical team at the cattle market. We did not get any news that the bull had fallen ill. If we had been told at once, perhaps the animal could have been saved."
