Silver hilsa is turning up in the nets of fishers at Hakaluki, the largest haor in Asia and a celebrated freshwater wetland.

Hilsa coming in alongside the usual local species has cheered the fishing families around the haor.

Local markets are selling the fish at comparatively low prices as a result.

Local fishers say a fair number of hilsa were caught in Hakaluki five or six years ago, but for several years afterwards there were almost none.

This monsoon a notable quantity is again coming up in the nets.

The fisheries department said hilsa have established movement routes and habitat in fresh water in rivers and haors across the country.

Fisheries scientists say that when sanctuary management and jatka protection increase hilsa movement along river routes, the fish reach upstream waters like these.
