The Commerce Ministry has approved the export of 3,000 tonnes of hilsa to India for the upcoming Durga Puja. The ministry announced this in a notice on Saturday, 21 September.

There had been discussion for some time over whether the new government would export hilsa to India, and the decision has now come.

Hilsa exports are usually permitted by the Commerce Ministry, but before that a recommendation must come from the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.

The livestock ministry, however, had been saying all along that no hilsa would be exported to India this time.
